Aims

The aims of MPN&MPNr-EuroNet’s eighth workshop to be held in Prague, Czech Republic, on September 25-27, 2013 are:

  1. to share information on the newest developments in MPN and related congenital diseases, hereditary erythrocytosis and hereditary thrombocythemia;
  2. to exchange and diffuse the latest information and guidelines on the molecular assays developed for diagnosis or research in laboratories working on MPN and related diseases across Europe;
  3. to provide guidelines for the molecular diagnosis of MPN, hereditary erythrocytosis and hereditary thrombocythemia;
  4. to discuss and plan for the various tasks and objectives of the 4 working groups (WG);
  5. to help and encourage young scientists to pursue a career dedicated to MPN.

To do so, abstracts will be selected for short talks in the special and working group sessions. Posters will be presented during the whole length of the meeting.

Each WG will convene under the direction of the WG chairs, first on September 25th, 2013, then in plenary sessions. New participants are encouraged to become actively involved in specific WG tasks. In addition, plenary sessions will cover the newest knowledge in MPN.

Objectives

Participants to the eighth MPN&MPNr-EuroNet meeting will have the opportunity to hear from the best experts about the newest developments in the molecular diagnosis of MPN and related congenital diseases. They will have the opportunity to present their own work and original diagnostic assays, and exchange with colleagues on the newest genes and techniques of interest in the field of MPN, congenital erythrocytosis and hereditary thrombocythemia. By joining one of MPN&MPNr-EuroNet working groups, they will be able to contribute actively, productively and durably in innovation, optimization and standardization of the biological diagnosis of MPN and related congenital diseases in Europe.

Abstract Submission

Participants are encouraged to submit an abstract in relation to the diagnosis of MPN, new mutations in MPN, the histopathology of MPN, inflammation in MPN, congenital erythrocytosis, hereditary thrombocythemia, and the JAK/STAT and other signalling pathways of interest in MPN. Early stage researchers and junior biologists and clinicians are especially encouraged to submit abstracts.
Abstracts should be composed as follows:

  • Title
  • Names of co-authors
  • Institutions and addresses
  • E-mail address of corresponding author
  • Text (body of text less than 2000 characters, including spaces).

All abstracts will be put together in an Abstract Book that will be distributed to participants during the meeting.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is August 5th, 2013.

Scholarships

MPN&MPN-EuroNet offers scholarships to early state researchers (ESRs). ESRs are PhD students, researchers, biologists or clinicians who received their MD or PhD degree less than 8 years ago. To apply for a scholarship, ESRs must submit an abstract following the on line procedure, and send a letter of motivation and their curriculum vitae to Mrs. Elodie Hervio. The deadline for application to a scholarship is August 5th, 2013.
Applicants will be informed of the decision regarding attribution of scholarship via E-mail by August 19th, 2013.

Visa regime in the Czech Republic

Czech Republic has been part of the European Union and Schengen space since December 2007.

Currency

Currency in Czech Republic is the Czech Crown (CZK).
The current exchange rate (as of March 2013) is 1 € = 24.523 CZK.
As the official currency, the Czech crown is the best and often the only possible currency to use when paying. Although Czech Republic is part of the European Union, the Euro is not widely accepted. Some stores, restaurants and hotels accept payments in Euros but the exchange rate may not be advantageous. However, many exchange offices are available and easy to reach everywhere in the centre.

The main airport is Václav Havel Airport Prague.

    • Taxi
      It takes approximately 25 – 30 minutes (40 minutes in heavy traffic) to reach the centre. The price for taxi is approx. 500-600 CZK from the Václav Havel Airport to the Grand Majestic Plaza hotel. Please check the price with the taxi driver at entering the cab.
      Please contact counters of taxi operators located at the arriving hall of Terminal 1 and 2 (AAA Radiotaxi, Radiocab taxi). Departure points are situated in front of arriving halls.
    • Public transport
      The Airport Express is a special line connecting the Airport with the Main Train Station. The bus stops right at the Republic square (2 minutes walking from the hotel).
      One way ticket costs 60 CZK. It takes approximately 40 minutes.
      Or
      Bus No. 100 leaves from the outside of the Arrivals terminal and will take you to the Zličín metro (underground) terminal station of line “B”. From there, you can take the metro using the same ticket to continue to Náměstí republiky (Republic square) Metro station (13 stops). It takes approximately 50 minutes. One way ticket costs 32 CZK.

Czech Republic has a dense rail network. Connections by train are usually relatively reliable and cheap.

Public transport in Prague

There are three lines of Metro and dense network of trams and buses. The transport is comfortable, quick and cheap. Tickets are universal, available in kiosks and in ticket machines in Metro stations and at some of tram stations. Prices:

Basic ticket – up to 90 min. 32 CZK 24 hrs ticket 110 CZK
Short-term ticket – up to 30 min. 24 CZK 72 hrs ticket 310 CZK

Accommodation

Each participant has to make his/her own room reservation.
It is recommended to stay at:

  • Grand Majestic Plaza Hotel where the main event will take place.
    4* deluxe Grand Majestic Plaza has 196 spacious design rooms. Rooms are equipped with individually adjustable air-conditioning, internet connection, LCD TV-SAT, radio, alarm clock, minibar, coffee & tea making facilities, safe deposit box, writing desk and chair. Prague - Touristic information

Prague is known for its historical treasures and is said to be one of the most attractive cities in the world. The historic centre of Prague (Hradčany with Prague Castle, the Lesser Quarter, the Charles Bridge, Old Town square including the Astronomical Clock, New Town and Vyšehrad) occupies an area of 8,66 km² on both sides of the Vltava river and has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1992.
The historical centre of Prague is characterized by winding alleys and all architectural styles (romanesque, gothic, baroque, classicist, art nouveau, cubist, functionalist and other modern styles) are represented. You can prove yourself that the Prague’s nick name of the “City of hundred towers” is quite adequate.
Weather in the end of September may be quite variable – from the “Indian summer” with temperatures over 20 °C to a humid autumn weather with temperatures around 10 °C. The mean daily maximums are 18 °C, the mean daily minimums are 8 °C.
